The training package ‘Ladder for Life’, a peer education methodology with 25 activities, has as main objective to promote the acquisition of basic knowledge on HIV-AIDS prevention, to contribute to the development of positive attitudes towards people living with HIV and to increase interpersonal and communicative skills through activities using a participatory and personalized approach. The Ladder for Life package comprises a guideline for the peer educator/facilitator and cards which form the basis of the 25 Ladder for Life activities. The 25 activities cover the main HIV-AIDS prevention areas, including biological, social, cultural, communication aspects, as well as life skills and gender.
The cards form the basis of the 25 activities of the Ladder for Life. The 25 activities cover the main HIV-AIDS prevention areas, including biological, social, cultural, communication aspects, as well as life skills and gender. The sequence of the activities is determined by an increasing level of difficulty. Apart from that, the activities are divided in 'basic' and 'optional'. Ideally, all activities should be undertaken, but if, due to limited resources, only the basic activities can be realized, the ‘basic’ activities offer a good basic peer education.
The pamphlets have drawings similar to those from the cards and, consequently, contribute to the internalization of the information. The pamphlets contain a clear and simple language; they may be easily reproduced in large quantities and also be used separately from the package. The list of pamphlets is attached to the present guideline and for each activity it is described which pamphlets may be used and distributed to complement the activity.
